1. The Skinny Grilled Cheese
Put a teaspoon of extra virgin olive oil in a pan, put a piece of whole wheat bread in the pan and lightly coat the bread with organic skim mozzarella or cheddar cheese. Cook for 3 minutes or until toasty, and enjoy. This is one of my favorite skinny swaps for weight loss because there is only one slice of bread so you save your waistline with fewer carbohydrates and since this is light on the cheese it is lower in fat!
2. The Spaghetti Squash Meal
To lower the fat and save on carbohydrates swap out spaghetti for the noodle like flesh of spaghetti squash and you'll enjoy the same texture without a load of carbs. Squash is great because it is full of cancer-fighting antioxidants like alpha- and beta-carotene.
Frequently asked questions
3. The Lettuce Wrap
As the weather gets warmer it is great to have quick sandwiches so you spend less time in the kitchen and more time outside enjoying the warm weather. Avoid a carbohydrate energy crash by kicking your standard two slices of bread to the curb and instead wrapping your sandwich ingredients in a romaine lettuce. To jazz up your lettuce wraps you can add mushrooms, peppers, onions and whatever else is healthy and tastes great!
4. Baked Cinnamon Apple Dessert
Who does not love warm apples? They taste great and they are healthy. Try baking sliced apples with a dash of cinnamon! Yummy! Cook for 40 minutes and enjoy this healthy whole food dessert without the guilt!
5. Mashed Cauliflower
Potatoes have loads of simple carbs that cause an unhealthy rise in blood sugar. Instead of mashed potatoes, try steaming fresh cauliflower, adding a tiny bit of butter (I use a teaspoon), 1 teaspoon of milk, and puree. And yes, butter and milk is in my opinion makes a large difference in the taste. You can make your mashed cauliflower without butter but I don’t find it as tasty. You could also use olive oil, which I’ve seen in other recipes but haven’t tried yet.
6. Turkey Meatloaf
Swap out your regular meat loaf recipe for some turkey to save loads of calories and fat! Turkey meatloaf is one of my favorite recipes because it tastes great and it is healthy. I also find it to be much lighter. Enjoy!
7. Have a Healthy Smoothie
Swap out your ice cream habit with your own fruit smoothie to save on calories and fat. I prefer strawberries and bananas with 1 cup of plain Greek yogurt as my favorite healthy smoothie. To spice this dessert up I put this in a pretty cup with a swirly straw! This is my favorite swap because I am eating healthy and beating my sugar craving with natural sugars from fruit. Much healthier and in my opinion way more fun!
