1. Take the Stairs
I know, you’ve probably heard of this one before, but it’s one of the easiest ways to boost your calorie burn. Think about it. Even walking up the stairs burns more calories than just standing there and riding the escalator or elevator. Taking the stairs anytime you have the chance can burn hundreds of extra calories every day! So hoof it at work, the mall and at your next doctor’s appointment.
2. Park Far Away
Note my disclaimer here – never do this in a dark parking lot when you’re alone. During daylight in a busy shopping area, though, this is the perfect way to boost your calorie burn without much extra effort. Simply choose a parking spot as far from the store as you can and all those extra steps will really add up to many calories burned.

3. Exercise
If you’re rolling your eyes and saying, “duh,” keep reading. Of course, exercise burns calories and it’s one of the best ways to keep your weight in check and prevent a variety of health conditions I know you’d rather avoid. Here’s the bonus. A good workout ups your calorie burn for several hours afterward, so you can continue burning calories even if you’ve plopped on the couch to watch television. Good stuff, right?
4. Eat More Protein
Before you double your portion sizes, keep in mind that eating more calories than you burn translates to weight gain. What I’m suggesting here is sticking to the same number of daily calories, but increasing your protein intake and cutting back elsewhere. Put down the brownie and step away from the cake. Your body expends a good amount of energy when it breaks down protein, so it goes to follow that upping your intake can rev your metabolism, which boosts calorie burn. Fresh meat, beans, eggs and cheese are great sources of protein.
5. Stand More
I’m not going to lie. I love a couple of straight hours sitting on the couch watching my favorite shows or reading a magazine. It’s a nice indulgence, but it won’t do anything for my calorie burn. Standing up naturally burns more calories than sitting does. I’m not suggesting reading while standing up. However, if you pace the house or your office while you’re on the phone or march in place during the commercials, you’ll easily boost your calorie burn.

6. Do Chores
If you can afford to pay someone to do your least favorite chores, more power to you! But think about this: all that activity adds up to hundreds of calories, which might change your way of seeing things. Wash your own car, schlep your own mop and bucket of water around the house and wash and fold your own clothes and you’ll feel self-sufficient and you’ll burn extra calories too!
7. Get Rid of Your Desk Chair
Don’t worry – you don’t have to stand all day. You can torch mega calories and tone your midsection by sitting on a stability ball instead of your typical desk chair. Stick one in your office at work and stash another under your desk at home. The balance it takes to stay on the ball increases your daily calorie burn even if you don’t realize it.
