10 Tips for Staying Fit in the Cold ...

With the rapid drop in temperatures and the first official snow storms of the season, I think everyone could use some helpful tips for staying fit in winter. Just because it's cold outside doesn't mean you should give up your fitness regimen. In fact, it's more important than ever to stay active, just because it's so easy to live a more sedentary lifestyle when it's cold outside. Don't worry, with the right tips for staying fit in winter, not even frigid temperatures will stand in your way.

Winter Sports

One of the best tips for staying fit in winter is to take up a winter sport. It doesn't matter which one it is, just choose whatever you like to do. Even if you can't go skiing every weekend, try snowshoeing or ice skating. There are all kinds to choose from, and they make fantastic weekend or holiday activities as well, so you can stay fit no matter where you are.

2

Jogging

Oh, jogging is entirely possible in winter. If you choose to jog outdoors, though, you have to be very careful; make sure you aren't going to slip on ice or struggle through deep snow. There are opportunities to run indoors as well, such as indoor tracks or even treadmills, technically.

3

Geocache Adventures

A lot of my friends are geocache crazy, and they do it all year round. It's doubly fun in the winter, though, especially when you wind up in snow sprinkled forests. The temperatures and the snow give extra edge to an already exciting adventure, but again, make good choices. Don't go in the middle of a storm or when the temperatures are too cold.

4

Try Yoga

Yoga is an excellent choice in every season too, but you should really try it in winter. It keeps you warm, which is always a plus. However, the smooth flexibility you get from yoga is beneficial in the winter as well. It's all too easy to experience aches, pains, and stiff joints in this kind of weather. Doing yoga regularly keeps your muscles fluid and pliant.

5

Control Your Vices

Not all fitness tips revolve around exercise. Like say, it's all too easy to stay sedentary when it's cold outside. That's not even your fault. There are times when you have to spend a lot of time in your house, simply because inclement weather makes traveling, even to do errands, risky or even impractical. However, tempting as it is to indulge in rich, warm cocoa or snack foods when you're stranded, try to avoid it. Don't eat more, smoke more, or drink more when you're stuck inside.

To give oneself earnestly to the duties due to men, and, while respecting spiritual beings, to keep aloof from them, may be called wisdom.

Get Fit at Home

Instead, do what you can to stay fit right in your home! There are many ways to do this, such as exercising with a fitness DVD or an exercise show on TV. There are also plenty of games you can play on whatever gaming system you own to get fit. It's almost like having a class right in your living room! If you have exercise equipment, by all means, use that! Every little bit of exercise helps, especially when you're stuck indoors.

7

Experiment with Different Routines

Don't get bored. People get unmotivated in winter, whether it involves their jobs, their classes, or their exercise regimens. Avoid falling into an exercise rut, because boredom just makes it easier to skip. Vary up your routine every so often and incorporate new routines and exercises into your regular sessions. Doing so keeps your body from getting lazy and your mind from getting bored.

8

Hit the Gym

Is it too cold or dangerous to exercise outside? Too distracted to do it at home? If only for the winter, then, think about going to the gym – unless you already have a membership, of course. If you do, use it! Even if you simply use the Elliptical or take a swim, you're getting exercise. Go with your friends too, if you want; you can motivate each other.

9

Go Dancing

This might not be a regular activity, but it's a great way to get fit while having fun. You can either grab your partner or your friends for a night of dancing once or twice a month, or make this a regular thing by taking classes. You'll be learning a new skill, having a great time, keeping warm, and getting fit!

10

Trust the Zumba

If you're not really interested in going out dancing or learning a particular dance but still like to exercise by getting your rhythm on, seriously try Zumba. It's the latest sweeping craze, but it really seems to work. It's an excellent way to spend a cold, snowy afternoon or evening.

Keeping fit when it's cold outside is harder, but it's also incredibly important. Your first instinct is to hibernate on the couch, wrapped up and cozy, with a good book and a cup of tea. Well, that's always my first instinct, anyway. As you can see, though, there are lots of ways you can still exercise and get fit even in wintertime. Do you like winter sports, indoor activities, or some combination of the two?
